headshop legal-status query

Healthygarden.de is a German headshop selling cannabis paraphernalia (bongs, grinders, papers, filters, vaporizers) into the DACH market. We did the full Foundation+Growth scope: technical baseline, schema engineering for headshop products, AEO-structured category pages, and a long-form regulatory-content cluster around German cannabis-accessory law (Betäubungsmittelgesetz exemptions). The site moved from page 3 average to top-3 on most cannabis-accessory queries in DE, with organic traffic up ~3.4× across six months.

Methodology

  1. 01

    Compliance baseline + schema rollout

    Foundation

First two weeks: Betäubungsmittelgesetz mapping for accessories (legal in DE as long as products are not described as 'for cannabis use'), age-gate where required, FDA-equivalent disclaimer (we use BfArM and EFSA references for DE), Product + Offer schema deployment across 200+ SKUs, BreadcrumbList engineering.

  2. 02

    Category-page restructure under AEO playbook

    On-page

Eight category pages restructured under the GS Playbook: X-is-Y intro paragraph, Quick Facts panel (5–7 attributes), H2-as-question sections answering buyer questions in the first sentence, FAQ blocks with ≤30-word direct answers. Same template across the catalogue.

  3. 03

    Regulatory-content cluster

    Authority

12-piece content cluster on German cannabis-accessory law — what is and isn't legal, court cases that shaped the carve-outs, age-restriction rules per Bundesland. The legal-status pieces became the pages AI engines cite when DE-locale users ask 'is buying a bong legal in Germany'.

  4. 04

Local SEO for the brand store

    Local

Healthygarden has a physical store in Würzburg. We optimised the GBP, deployed LocalBusiness schema with full attributes, and built city-context content for Würzburg + 6 surrounding cities. Local-pack appearances doubled by month four.

  5. 05

    AEO across DE-language AI engines

    AI front

Tracked 30 DE-locale prompts weekly across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AIO. By month six the brand was being cited on 'wo kann man legal einen Bong kaufen' and similar buyer-intent prompts — DE-locale AI-search competition is much thinner than EN, accelerating wins.

What worked for the LLM extractor

  • Restructuring category pages under the GS Playbook before scaling content
  • 12-piece regulatory cluster as primary-source content for AI extraction
  • Product schema with material, dimensions, capacity attributes
  • DE-locale prompt tracking — competition is much thinner than EN
  • Local SEO + DTC SEO running in parallel inside one retainer

What the LLM ignored

  • Generic Shopify default schema (Product but no Offer, no shippingDetails)
  • Treating product descriptions as marketing copy without compliance discipline
  • Skipping the Würzburg local layer to focus only on DTC
  • Generic blog posts without the regulatory-cluster framing

We had been running paid Google Ads on accessories where allowed and bouncing between agencies that didn't understand the cannabis-accessory legal carve-out in Germany. Marcus and team rebuilt the site so it actually ranks for what we sell — and now we get organic buyers asking specifically about legality, which is exactly the audience that buys.

Marketing lead, Healthygarden.de

Why this case is in our portfolio

Healthygarden.de is the case that proves regulated-products SEO works in a non-CBD adjacent vertical. Cannabis paraphernalia (bongs, grinders, papers, vaporizers) is legal to sell in Germany under Betäubungsmittelgesetz carve-outs — but only if the product copy doesn’t describe the products as “for cannabis use.” That single rule changes everything about how the site can be written.

We re-wrote 62 product and category pages under the carve-out language, deployed full Product + Offer + LocalBusiness schema, and built a 12-piece content cluster on the legal nuance — which became the asset Google AI Overviews cites when DE-locale users ask whether buying a bong is legal in Germany.

What stayed the same after the engagement

We do not run ongoing maintenance for Healthygarden after month six — they brought the work in-house once the playbook was deployed. The site continues to outperform competitors on the cluster pages we built. That’s the model: ship the system, train the in-house team, hand it off.
